Jesus Christ – The Resurrection and The Life”

John 11:18-27

 Introduction:

John’s Gospel is filled with many vivid portraits of the Lord Jesus Christ. Everyone is a masterpiece of His greatness and His glory. In this chapter, the greatest of all the miracles of Jesus is on display. In the events surrounding the resurrection of Lazarus from the dead, we can see the power of the Lord Jesus Christ.

This morning, I would like for us to look together at these magnificent verses and get a glimpse of Jesus as The Resurrection and The Life. I want to show you why we do not have to live in misery, why life does not have to be a time of defeat, why you do not have to fear the day of your death, how you can enjoy an abundant and full life. I want to tell you what it takes to come to know Jesus Christ and the glorious life that He can give. Let’s take a few minutes to have an encounter with Jesus Christ – The Resurrection and The Life.

I.  The Predicament That Had God’s People Devastated: John 11:21

A.  Death is a HORRIBLE EVENT.

B.  Death is a UNIVERSAL EVENT (cf. Heb. 9:27; Gen. 3:19; Romans 5:12).

C.  Death is an UNANTICIPATED EVENT.

II.  The Power That Jesus Christ Claimed: John 11:25a

A.  Jesus Christ raised others from the dead.

1. Jairus’ daughter (Mark 6:41-42)

2. The Widow of Nain’s son (Luke 7:11)

3. Lazarus (John 11:43-44)

B.  Jesus Christ promised to raise us, His followers from the dead (1 Cor. 15:20-23; 1 Thess. 4:13-17)

C.  Jesus Christ raised Himself from the dead (John 10:18)

III.  The Promises That Jesus Christ Declared: John 11:25b-26a

A.  The promise of curing our spiritual death (cf. Eph. 2:1-4)

B.  The promise of conquering our fear of death (John 5:24; 8:51; 1 John 5:10-13)

CONCLUSION – “Christ’s Final Plea (John 11:26b –  “Do You Believe Me?).  Why God’s plan of salvation is so vitally important?

1. God’s plan is the only one that guarantees entrance into Heaven (John 14:6)

2. God’s plan is the only one that guarantees escape from sin and all its baggage (Rom. 6:23; 5:9; 1 John 3:2)

3. God’s plan is the only one that He endorsed (Acts 4:12)
