“Jesus Christ – The Great High Priest”

John 17:1-26

 Introduction:

As we have journeyed through John’s majestic Gospel, we have encountered many glorious portraits of the Lord Jesus Christ. Every portrait that each chapter has given to us has been an encouragement and a blessing. This chapter is no exception!

When we come to John chapter 17, we find ourselves standing on holy ground. In these verses, the Holy Spirit of God gives us access into the Garden of Gethsemane as Jesus pours His heart out to His Heavenly Father. Jesus Christ prays essentially about three matters. First, he prays for Himself that He may be glorified. Second, He prays for the eleven apostles, that they may be protected and sanctified. And third, He prays for the whole church down through the centuries, that they all may be unified.

 I. The Great High Priest Prays for Himself: John 17:1-5

A. Christ prays to b glorified in and by mean of the cross (vv.1-4).

1. Christ has been given power over all flesh (v.2a)

2. Christ gains the right to give eternal life (vv.2b-4)

B. Christ prays to be glorified by the return of the glory He had before creation (v.5)

II. The Great High Priest Prays for His Apostles: John 17:6-19

A. Christ prays for His apostles preservation (vv.6-11)

B. Christ prays for His apostles protection (vv.12-15)

C. Christ prays for His apostles purity (vv.16-19)

III. The Great High Priest Pray for His Church: John 17:20-26

A. Christ prays for our lives to be marked by unity (vv.21-23)

B. Christ prays for our hone-going (v.24)

C. Christ prays for our hearts to be filled with love (vv.25-26)

 CONCLUSION:

The question that remains is are they being fulfilled in our life and in the life of this church? A quick review is in order.

  • Are you saved? It is Christ’s desire that you come to know Him.
  • Is there unity in the church? It is Christ’s desire that there be.
  • Are we walking in love, one to the other as we should? That is Christ’s prayer for us!
