“Jesus Christ – Our Crucified Savior”

John 19:1-18

Introduction:

I would like to take you back in time to a day over 2,000 years ago that will forever stand as the most infamous day in the history of humanity. On that day, the creature took steps to kill its Creator. On that day, mankind raised its rebellious fist against the Almighty. On that day, the Beloved Son of God became the Lamb that was slain from the foundation of the world. The day Jesus Christ was crucified is the most infamous day in the history of the world.

This morning, I want us to see a portrait of Jesus Christ: Our Crucified Savior. Today, I want us to remember what He endured to provide salvation for sinners. Today, I want us to look at the King of kings and the Lord of lords as He dies for you and for me.

Today we will explore three truths. Our Savior was condemned, was crucified, and has conquered.

I. Our Savior Was Condemned: John 19:1-17

A. The brutal soldiers (vv.2-3)

B. The religious fanatics (vv.4-7, 15)

C. The governing class (vv.6-16)

D. The treacherous thieves (v.18)

E. The riotous crowd (Luke 23:21-23)

II. Our Savior Was Crucified: John 19:18-29

A. The pain of our Savior’s cross (v.18, they crucified Him”)

B. The purpose of our Savior’s cross (cf. Rom. 5:8; 1 John 2:2)

C. The primacy of our Savior’s cross (cf. 1 Cor. 1:18, 23-24; 2:14)

III. Our Savior Has Conquered: John 19:30-42

A. Our conqueror’s cry of victory (v.30a, “It is finished” – The Greek word is “Tetelestai”)

B. Our conqueror’s completion of victory (v.30b)

CONCLUSION:

The question that remains today is this; have you been saved? Are you trusting in Jesus and Jesus alone for your soul’s salvation? If you are trusting anything else, then you are lost and need to be born again. What will you do with Jesus?
